P.G.Cares Steps Up to Beautify Our Town
On Tuesday, July 22, the P.G. Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting marking the occasion of the completion of the first two landscaped projects by Pacific Grove Cares. It was attended by much of the City Council and the Mayor, City Public Works staff, as well as many appreciative citizens.
Mayor Rick Smith was on the scene and complimented the excellent work done by the PG Cares group. He also emphasized that the contribution of Pacific Grove staff working in partnership with the group was what made these projects so successful. Peggy Gibbs, P.G. Cares’ president, agreed and gave a shout-out in recognition of the help of PG Public Works Director Daniel Gho. She also acknowledged the great work done by Inca Landscape Management, which performed the landscape work.
Pacific Grove Cares, is a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to landscaping public spaces in Pacific Grove.”The organization has a passion to renovate, restore, and maintain landscaping on public property in our city. As a supporting city organization, it works closely with City staff. The spaces we have renovated will benefit all P.G. residents, families, employees, visitors, and businesses. This work has the potential to ignite a contagious passion for stewardship and protecting nature’s gifts.” PG Cares president Peggy Gibbs told the Beacon.
The first two PG Cares completed are at Chase Park West, located at Ocean and Jewell Avenue at the entrance to Lover’s Point. Another site is at Caledonia Park on Central Avenue in the area surrounding the Tommy Stillwell Court sign, which was completed on July 22, 2025.
PG Cares raises the funds, works with landscape designers, contractors, and City staff to come up with the plan for each space. It also purchases the plants, materials, and tools needed for each site. All funds raised go to the landscaped projects. Dedicated volunteers acted as project managers and will maintain these landscaping projects now that they are completed.
Peggy Gibbs, president of P.G. Cares, commented, “The design is brilliant; the historic pathway has been restored, the gentle contours and plantings are great. The new bay views are stunning without the dead tree and overgrown old plants, and weeds. The unique architectures of historic PG homes are now revealed.
The existing concrete path from Meals on Wheels to the back of Chase Park West now connects to the footpath that is suddenly a fun walkway. Chase Park West is once again visually connected to its sibling Chase Park East, with the path design and plantings. Memorial benches will be added at a later date by the City; two at Chase Park west and one at Caledonia Park.”
